After a furious battle in Crystal Catacombs between Aang, Katara, Zuko, who had just defected to Fire Nation, and Azula, and the intervention of Dai Li, it became clear Azula would win if immediate action was not take. Long Feng, realizing his fatal mistake, had no choice but to submit to the Princess. She told him that one that was born royalty is one that was born to rule. After Dai Li refused to move, smug Azula tells bewildered Long Feng that they did not know who to follow, as they were impressed by Azula's leadership. Long Feng, free from prison and seeing the princess' actions, orders Dai Li to arrest Azula. She arrests the entire Council of Five, along with Kuei, Sokka, and Toph, although the latter three manage to escape soon after. Azula throws Zuko in prison with Katara and her Coup commence. She used her new allies to capture Zuko, though Iroh was able to escape. Despite their arrival, Azula's plot goes just as plan. Avatar and his friends soon arrive to rescue Katara, who had been taken prisoner after mistakenly telling Azula that Zuko and Iroh were in the city, believing the Princess was Suki. Orchestrating a convincing charade, Princess uses her wiles to trick the former secretariat into perceiving her as helpless, deceiving him into the belief that she would be the ideal puppet to lead Dai Li until his release. As Azula predict, she was take to Long Feng to form a scheme. To this end, Mai and Ty Lee stag act in which they reveal their Fire Nation nationality and their affiliation to Azula, along with plans to undermine Earth King. While in the city, Azula immediately began organizing a Coup of destabilized government. Furthermore, Earth King unwittingly allows disguised Princess Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee to enter the Palace grounds as honored guests, presenting Fire Nation an opportunity to exploit circumstances to their advantage.
Main article: Coup of Ba Sing Se Despite unmasking Long Feng and outing Dai Li as untrustworthy, Team Avatar and King Kuei fail to crush the Conspiracy entirely, as Dai Li reveals to Long Feng that they remain loyal to him.
